Desire . . . . What do you really, really, want?
Mental Systems/Human Systems was conceived and launched as a speech for my Toastmaster Club, the Ohio Toastmasters of Columbus, Ohio. But its components were assembled out of the elements of a lifetime devoted to the study of ideas and concepts from academia and various scientific research, to Christian and Spiritual Concepts (which includes wisdom from the Holy Bible), observations, and life experiences. And I can't give enough credit to my parents who stayed together all of my life, and who raised and trained me to be much of what I am today.
Beginning as young as the second grade, I began to collect methods and techniques to solve problems and get things done. The way this notion came to me was when I made a decision and things went badly, I would be filled with regret and I'd wish that I could have another chance to make the same decision again, only differently. Because of this, one of the first areas I explored was decision-making. Good Decision-Making (GDM) keeps your options open. GDM limits the waste of such valuable resources as time, money, energy, and goodwill. GDM can help you to avoid some of the pain and suffering of this life –- even the pain of a broken heart. Good Decision-Making, along with other important life skills and attributes, can help lead you to victory and success in life.
Mental Systems/Human Systems is a thought and idea processing system that combines our habit-forming ability and tendency, along with specialized insights and understandings, methods and techniques, and memorization capabilities, to unleash your mental/spiritual powers on some task or goal you want to accomplish. Those tasks or goals could be related to school or college, job advancement or hobbies, causes or missions, business or profession, personal or global. But use your MS/HS powers only for Good, remember you will stand in front of God someday.
Another element of MS/HS came to me as a child, around the age 12, after I learned that I would have certain chores that had to be accomplish each day. It was during this period when I began re-thinking my chores to find ways of making them easier and faster to do. I knew if I didn't have my chores done by the time my parents came home, I would be in trouble. Even at this age and time, it was "logical" to me to get up and knock out my chores, right after breakfast, that way I'd have the rest of the day for myself. This was, for me, the beginning of a life-long strategy, to do a good work with the least amount of time, effort, and expense, in all areas of my life, including personal. Now, anytime I have to do some task or chore, if I'm going to have to do it on a fairly regular basis, I spend some time figuring out how to do it quickly with the least amount of time, effort, and expense. The goal -- to develop the habit of naturally and automatically analyzing any task or job within any context, to develop a strategy of how to simplify, speed-up, save money -- even to make more interesting and fun -- the things that ya got to do.
Another major element of MS/HS came to me when I was learning to drive a car during my junior year of high school (read the whole story in the sidebar). By developing a mental checklist of the primary driving tasks that had to be done correctly, and by memorizing that checklist of tasks, simplified the learning process and reassured me. So then I knew I was driving safely because I was following the "drive the car safely" mental checklist. By habitually and routinely carrying out those tasks on my mental checklist, gave me confidence that as my driving experiences continued, the habits I was cultivating would allow me to control a car both safely and skillfully. Memorizing and executing that mental checklist gave me courage and confidence in the fact that:
(1) - I knew what to do,
(2) - I knew how to do it, and
(3) - I knew in what order to do it
And reassured me that I would be successful. Here following is the secret core knowledge of Mental Systems/Human Systems –- Tools for Life.
Making the Habit of Making
Good, High-Quality Decisions
Your life, to a major extent, is controlled by the decisions you make.
We are creatures of habit. We have physical and mental habits. In fact, we are habit-making machines. So instead of being victims of our habits, we should take control of this habit-making function within us and make it work for us, instead of against us. Good Habits help you all of the time, and bad habits hurt you all of the time.
We must thoughtfully decide which positive habits we need to design, cultivate, develop, reinforce, and rely on. We must focus and commit our minds, bodies, and energies to all aspects of this project, for the payoff will be enormous. We should develop habits that will, whenever we find ourselves being idle or unthinking, have us acting on one of our positive habits.
Did you catch the implication of that last paragraph?
Of course, since we live in a civilization, we don't have total control over our lives. But to the extent that you can make a decision and then take the associated, required and progressive actions to support that decision –- this is our control over our lives. Thoughtfully, with wisdom, knowledge, insight, and prayer, do all that you can to make your desires and dreams a reality.
But why do we make the decisions that we make?
It's because of the things we use to make those decisions –- things like advice, research and information, education, experiences, hopes, fears, urban legends, desires, passions, fads and fantasies –– all of which must be processed thru our Core Operating Belief System (COBS), after being interpreted by our Worldview. (We will present an expanded discussion of both concepts later).
Our Worldview influences and controls how we see and think about what we see and think about. Our Core Operating Belief System is the information, experiences, values, rules and methods that we use to make decisions, and choose actions. Change your Worldview and you can change your COBS. Change your COBS and the way that you make your decisions will change, and so will your conclusions.
Recognizing, Creating, and Using Modes in MS/HS
But ultimately, regardless of what we are doing, we are using our brains: be it seeing and perceiving; hearing and listening, remembering and understanding, thinking, imagining, concentrating, or reflecting. Our brains automatically do all of the things just mentioned, but in the case of tasks that we must routinely repeat, things that we must do well in such as schoolwork, job tasks, hobbies, sports, or learning play a musical instrument, we train our brains to create "modes". When we shift our brains into a basketball-playing mode, for example, our brains increasingly focus on the rules that we've internalized, the skills that we've developed, our body memory, and our past experiences and training, but correspondingly, our brain pays less attention to the world around us and other aspects of our lives – it focuses on the game. When our brains shifts into a mode, it concentrates and optimizes our abilities to do the task at hand, making us more efficient, but at the same time it lightly notes other events, activities, or people around.
Our Brains and our minds have various modes, or specialized, systematic thinking states or conditions, which allows us to function more efficiently and successfully at carrying out various activities, jobs, tasks, and situations. To illustrate the idea of modes, consider an AM/FM radio. When the band selector is set to AM, you can tune in any AM station in your area. And when the band selector is set to FM, then you can tune and receive FM broadcasts, with the same radio. Although there are radio stations on either band, how they transmit those signals is very different. But by switching modes (with the band selector switch) the radio changes the state of its settings and changes which circuits are used to more effectively and efficiently bring you the desired broadcast station. Your brain has a similar capability that you can tap into and use. One radio, two functions or modes; one brain, many modes.
An example of this should be our state of mind and body control while we drive a car, in comparison with our state of mind and body control while we do our work, in comparison with our state of mind and body control while playing a favorite game or participating in a favorite activity. Our brain optimizes the mind/body cooperation and functioning, favoring the currently activity (reading, playing, doing math) with which we have some skill and experience –- this is mode. It's like when you are doing your job, and your thoughts are flowing smoothly. You're thinking in jargon. You see mental images that aid in your thinking and recall. Your fingers are effortlessly flying over the keyboard or across the page as you write with your pen –- this is mode.
And our brains have many built-in, natural, automatic functions, and tendencies that, if we understand them and use them, we'll be able to gain additional control over our minds and bodies, our thoughts and emotions. Mental Systems will teach you how to construct various mode architectures in your brain, modes and techniques to allow you to use your mind better and more creatively; modes and techniques to make better quality decisions; modes and techniques to become a better observer and more effective thinker –-better at learning how to learn, and more capable of appreciating and enjoying your life more now.
One of the first new modes that you need to construct is for using MS/HS's CELS*Thinking, its Techniques and Philosophies. Later, you will be adding new and specialized MS/HS Mind Tools, choosing the ones that suit your current needs and thinking tasks.
There are MS/HS Modes. There are MS/HS Techniques. There MS/HS Philosophies and Understandings. There are MS/HS skills. And the rest of this book is about helping you to conceive of a framework or structure, a context, if you will, for memorizing and using the Mind Expanding powers of Mental Systems/Humans Systems.
But for many of us, our inner environments are chaotic and confusing; many of us have little control over the images, thoughts, and ideas that pop to the front of our consciousness (with all of the implications that flow from that fact). Therefore, Mental Systems/Human Systems presents and teaches an organized, step-by-step system to retrain your brain, to develop new habits. However, you'll probably discover that the re-examination of your Worldview and Core Operating Belief System will go far toward helping you to quiet your head. So will taking into account the Spiritual dimensions of your life.
Wisdom, knowledge, information and disinformation all take up space in your head: your knowledge and memories about your family take up space in your head. Your knowledge about your job or your studies, take up space in your head. Things that you've learned and experienced in the past take up space in your head -- which is why we advocate Good Head-keeping.
Good Head Keeping: a process in which periodically we call forward and re-examine all of the stuff that we use to make decisions and run our lives with, to evaluate its value, accuracy, and reliability. We cannot allow ourselves to become emotionally or romantically attached to the stuff that we use to make decisions with. The information, ideas, philosophies, "facts", reasonings, etcetera, must continually earn their place in our "life adjusting" toolbox, and our mental databank (our brains). Some "facts" that we learned as a child are no longer true; should we still use that incorrect information –- even if your favorite aunt told you?
For example, if you believed that topic/info "A" was true, you would use "A" as the basis for making certain decisions a certain way. However, you later learn that topic/info "A" is actually false. MS/HS demands that you should "tag" that information as such, make a mental note and habit to avoid using that information for making future decisions. Otherwise, if you continue to use that information for making decisions, those decisions will be flawed.
Introducing the MS/HS Consideration Engine:
CELS*Thinking is an organic Consideration Engine that can, when it's used properly, lead you systematically to a much clearer understanding and vision of what you should do or say. By learning and practicing and developing these MS/HS list-processing habits, you will discover that you see all of your mental, emotional, and thinking issues differently -- more clearly, more comprehensively, more insightfully, and more completely. This consideration engine is named "CELS*Thinking" after its core thinking and consideration modes, but it includes other essential components that must be present and used to insure the most through consideration of the thinking tasks before you.
CELS*THINKING is a collection of MS/HS mind tools, a systematic method for using your mind for observations, consideration, contemplation, and meditation, for reasoning, better understanding, analysis, insight, and decision-making. CELS*THINKING can be used to think about any topic, idea or decision. It's a step-by-step process, a procedure, a method that trains both the conscious and sub-conscious minds -- to help you to experience your life differently, because you think about your life differently. CELS*THINKING helps to insure that any subject, issue, or thinking task is more thoroughly considered, if you routinely use it.
The CELS*THINKING Consideration Engine: CELS is an acronym made up of the four (4) basic perception and consideration modes -- Creativity, Emotional, Logical, and Spiritual. These represent four different and fundamental perspectives from which to consider an idea, issue, conversation, action, or decision. By considering things from the CELS*Perspectives will force you notice and think about things that you wouldn't normally. CELS*THINKING will teach you to alternate your consideration of an issue or decision between both the Big Picture perspective and the Detail Perspective. CELS*THINKING encourages you to take your values into account when making decisions, as well as other people's thoughts, desires, and feelings. The crucial idea here is to consider your thinking task or possible decision from logical perspective, and then to re-think about it from an emotional perspective. But you are not through until you re-visit that thinking task from the Creative perspective. And finally, make sure that you consider your thinking task from the Spiritual perspective -- but not necessarily in that order. Using CELS*Thinking means to shift your thinking task from mode to mode, noting new insights and observations along the way.
But there is more to CELS*THINKING besides the four basic thinking modes. The reason we are introducing the various components of CELS*THINKING at this point in this book is to help you to get more out of your reading the first time thru. Other essential CELS*THINKING components include "Self=Monitoring" which is a habit that requires you to make mental notes (and paper notes, remember your MS/HS Adventure Notebook) about your observations into your reasoning and thinking approaches. Basically, you learn to watch yourself as you think, learn, remember, reason, and make decisions. You must teach yourself to remember to use CELS*Thinking and then watch yourself as you use CELS*Thinking. Self=Monitoring is a basic Mental System habit you must conceive, develop, and use. As you watch yourself think and act, especially in light of MS/HS Observations, Understandings, Principles, and Philosophy, you will come to know yourself in completely new ways: you will find that you have skills and abilities that you didn't know that you have -- You are amazing. All of God's children are. Still, you are special, and you are unique. And the Good news is that you were made in the image of God, which means that you have capabilities that you may not be aware of yet.
Another essential and fundamental component of CELS*THINKING is "Consequence Projection", which requires that, once you think that you have reached an answer or solution to your current thinking task, you use your creativity and imagination to "see" your decision play out itself in the "real world"; the goal here is to truly try to imagine the future, and then watching your “answer” going down different paths of happenings, and to discover the quality of that “answer” or “decision”. For example, you might imagine winning a certain prize or award: you might see yourself working hard and doing research to help yourself to win; or you might see yourself taking certain short cuts to win -- what might be the different outcomes from choosing one those two paths, taking one of the two decisions? "Consequence Projection" is a movie for your mind, starring You living with the consequences of your decision. Can you see the consequences of your decision? Can you live with them? It's better to see the consequences of a bad decision in your mind's imagination, than to experience them in the real world. Many times the message of "Consequence Projection" is to re-think your decision, re-running it thru all four of the primary CELS modes, sprinkling in the use of other MS/HS Mind Tools such as H-5-W Thinking, Contextual Analysis, or Historical Context.
And, of course, there are the other MS/HS Mind Tools that help you to notice and to see more aspects of your thinking task than you would have previously. And due to the normal thought and thinking flow of the inner workings of MS/HS, you should soon begin to experience improvements in your memorization and recall skills.
The basic MS/HS CELS*THINKING Consideration Engine includes the following essential components that must be present and used to insure the most through consideration of the thinking tasks before you:
(1) - Self=Monitoring
(2) - Memorization
(3) - Creativity
(4) - Emotional
(5) - Logical
(6) - Spiritual
(7) - Consequence Projection
(8) - Miscellaneous MS/HS Mind Tools
(9) - InSight Zephyrs & Principles
In the next chapter, we will begin to present and discuss MS/HS ideas, philosophies, understandings, insight and concepts. This chapter can be considered CELS*Thinking LITE. In upcoming chapters we will spend more time on each of the MS/HS CELS*Modes: Logic and Reason, Creativity and Idea Generation, the Emotional Feelings and thoughts experienced by You and Others. And of course, the Faith, Hope, Love, and Consciousness of the Spiritual Perspective.
But we expect for you to consider these by using CELS*Thinking evaluation and consideration techniques. That's why we are presenting them here. You can't mess up or hurt anything by trying out some of these basic MS/HS Concepts, so feel free to experience and experiment. So as you think about what you are reading, do so with the understanding that there is an Emotional way of thinking about this discussion. And there is also a Logical way of thinking about this understanding. Of course, there is a Spiritual way of considering these insights and observations. And there are many, many Creative ways to meditate about these philosophies. And as you begin to apply CELS*Thinking to more and more of your thinking tasks, situations where you must figure out something or solve a problem or make a decision, we know you will begin to experience more and more "Eureka Moments" in your life. And you will become more successful with your thinking tasks.
Free Your Mind
Dear Reader, the Adventure has begun, you're already in "the Matrix", don't you know that yet? The power and enlightenment of MS/HS and CELS*Thinking are progressive, and as you have more and more experiences using them, you will see more and more ways to make them work for you. Begin making a habit of using MS/HS and CELS*Thinking for your idle and flow moments; creativity is a great substitute for TV. Entertainment and wonderment are all around you. Start with little tasks at first, and then build toward big successes. The following chapters will delve deeper into the revelations, philosophies, insights, and techniques introduced above. Using what you’ve been exposed to thus far should give you a certain level of sensitivity to further discussions of these concepts and techniques—aren’t you excited?
